What Is an On-Grid Solar Inverter?
An on-grid inverter, also called a grid-tied inverter, converts DC electricity from the panels into AC electricity synchronized with the utility supply. Solar production can reduce the power drawn from the grid while your appliances are operating.
When solar output is below the load, the grid supplies the difference. When output exceeds the load, the installation may export the surplus where approved, or limit generation using suitable export controls. A conventional PV-only on-grid unit does not store electricity for later use.
It suits a property with useful daytime demand and an available grid connection. If keeping appliances running during load shedding is a priority, compare a documented backup or hybrid inverter system before choosing a PV-only unit.

Grid import
0.0 kWAvailable surplus
2.0 kWSurplus may be exported if permitted or curtailed by compatible controls. It is not automatically stored.
This is a power-flow illustration, not an energy yield or bill-savings estimate. The solar input represents available AC power within inverter limits; weather, conversion losses and operating restrictions affect actual production.
Net Metering Compatibility and Grid Approval in Pakistan
An inverter described as “net-metering compatible” is not an approval for your connection. The exact equipment, site, protection and metering arrangement must meet the electricity provider’s requirements.
NEPRA’s 2026 Prosumer Regulations establish a net-billing framework. Confirm the terms that apply to your new application or existing agreement rather than assuming an exported unit offsets an imported unit one-for-one. The regulations define applicant eligibility by supply category and phase; ask the utility about your connection before buying an inverter.
Exact Model Documents
Obtain the full model number, datasheet, grid-protection and anti-islanding test documentation requested by the electricity provider. A brand name or seller’s assurance is insufficient.
Connection and Metering
Confirm permitted capacity, supply phase, connection review, meter arrangement and applicable billing terms. Include required controls and connection costs in the quotation.
Check the NEPRA Prosumer Regulations, 2026 and August 2026 approval-process amendment, then obtain the provider’s current application requirements. Utility approval remains part of the process.

MPPT: Match the On-Grid Inverter to Your Panels
A maximum power point tracker adjusts the PV operating point to collect available power. Multiple independent MPPTs can help with different roof directions or differently shaded strings, but tracker count is only one specification.
Voltage Window
Check startup voltage, the MPPT operating range and maximum DC voltage. Use temperature-corrected panel Voc when checking the maximum series-string voltage.
Current Limits
Check both operating and short-circuit current limits for each input. High-current panels and parallel strings can exceed them even when total array wattage seems acceptable.
PV Oversizing
Follow the maximum permitted PV power and string design for the exact unit. A larger DC array does not increase the inverter’s AC nameplate output. Check permitted oversizing and each input limit together.
Roof Layout
Map orientations, shade and usable roof area before selecting MPPT count. Separate trackers are not a substitute for a correctly designed string layout.
Single-Phase vs Three-Phase On-Grid Inverters
Supply compatibility and export eligibility are separate decisions. Check both before choosing the model.
Single-Phase
A single-phase unit feeds a matching AC supply. Check voltage, allowable current, cable sizing and the provider’s connection rules. A single-phase household supply is not proof of eligibility for a prosumer application.
Three-Phase
A three-phase inverter distributes output over the phases according to its design. Check rated current, voltage and site load distribution. The total nameplate kW is not necessarily available on one phase.
Read the Full Suffix
Similar model families can contain different phase and voltage variants. Match the full product code to the datasheet and approved installation, including monitoring and metering accessories.
Supply Upgrade
Ask the electricity provider whether a phase or sanctioned-load change is required. Include the approved scope and charges in the project budget rather than treating an inverter purchase as the whole connection cost.
On-Grid vs Hybrid Inverters
Compare the job each system performs, not just its printed kW rating.
| Requirement | Conventional on-grid | Hybrid |
|---|---|---|
| Daytime solar | Grid-synchronized PV generation | PV conversion with compatible storage management |
| Battery connection | Usually no direct battery interface | Approved battery platform required |
| Grid outage | Conventional output stops | Backup only with documented capability and correct installation |
| Export | Subject to grid controls and utility approval | Also subject to model, controls and utility approval |
| Total budget | Inverter, array, protection, controls and commissioning | May also include storage and isolated backup wiring |

Why On-Grid Solar Stops During a Grid Outage
A conventional grid-tied inverter relies on a valid utility supply. Its anti-islanding protection disconnects output when that supply fails, helping prevent an unintended energized island. Sunshine alone does not provide a usable backup supply.
No Automatic Backup
For essential appliances during load shedding, specify documented backup equipment, adequate stored energy where needed and proper separation from the utility grid.
Generator Compatibility
Do not assume a generator can substitute for the grid. Any generator or AC-coupled arrangement must be explicitly supported and engineered for protection, power control and safe changeover.
SMA’s grid-protection technical information explains island detection and grid disconnection. Special backup systems require their own documented equipment and operating arrangement.
On-Grid Inverter Installation Considerations
Array and String Design
Check temperature-corrected string voltage, operating current, short-circuit current and maximum PV power. A nominal panel wattage comparison cannot verify those limits.
Protection and Earthing
Have a qualified installer select the isolation, overcurrent and surge protection, cable sizes and earthing arrangement for the equipment and site.
Location and Heat
Follow model-specific IP rating, mounting, ventilation and clearance requirements. Heat can reduce available output; leave access for inspection and service.
Controls and Commissioning
Confirm CT or meter requirements for export control, monitoring access, approved grid settings, recorded commissioning checks and the local warranty claim process.

On-Grid Inverter FAQs
What is the on-grid inverter price in Pakistan today?
Current listed on-grid inverter prices are Rs. 36,000–490,000. Compare the same capacity, phase, PV input limits and warranty. These figures cover the inverter alone.
What does an on-grid solar inverter do?
It converts solar-panel DC power into AC synchronized with the utility supply. Available generation can serve connected loads; surplus export depends on the installation, controls and utility approval.
Will an on-grid inverter work during load shedding?
A conventional grid-tied inverter stops its grid-connected output when the utility supply fails, even in sunshine. Documented backup equipment and electrical isolation are needed for an independent backup circuit.
Is an on-grid inverter compatible with net metering?
Technical compatibility is only one requirement. Confirm the exact model documentation, utility approval, supply phase, metering and the billing arrangement applicable to your connection. A net-metering label does not itself authorize export.
Can a single-phase inverter qualify for grid export?
Do not assume that an inverter matching your household supply meets the connection rules. Confirm applicant eligibility and phase requirements with the electricity provider before purchase or any proposed supply upgrade.
Can I add batteries directly to an on-grid inverter?
A conventional on-grid PV inverter usually has no direct battery charging interface. Storage may require a compatible AC-coupled system or replacement with a hybrid model. Backup operation needs a documented design.
Is on-grid cheaper than hybrid?
Compare like-for-like capacity and functions. A PV-only grid-connected system has fewer storage components, but the full price depends on the exact inverter, protection, controls and installation. The two types provide different functions.
How many MPPTs should I choose?
Different roof orientations or shading patterns can benefit from separate independent MPPTs. Also check each tracker’s voltage range, operating current and short-circuit current limits.
What is zero export?
Compatible controls can limit power flowing to the grid, often using a CT or meter. This does not provide outage backup or automatically remove connection and approval requirements.
How do I compare 5kW and 10kW on-grid prices?
Use the capacity table and exact model list. Match phase, maximum PV input, MPPT current, monitoring and warranty; a larger AC rating alone does not determine the right installation.
Does inverter price include installation?
Treat the listed price as inverter-only unless the seller specifies otherwise. Obtain an itemized quotation for mounting, cabling, protection, metering, commissioning and any connection charges.
Which on-grid inverter brand is best?
Shortlist the exact models that match the array, supply and installation requirements. Verify local service and written warranty. Catalog prices alone cannot establish reliability or rank brands.
